Sensei Jeff Mathews
Jeff Mathews started karate at age 19 and received his 1st degree black belt in 1992.
He currently holds a 5th degree black belt in Itosu Ryu (Shito Ryu) style. With over 35 years experience, Sensei Jeff is well educated as a practitioner of traditional karate.
He is part of the Nihon Karatedo Itosu Kai organization.
Sensei Jeff’s teaching philosophy is to help students become better people through martial arts training and help them develop a stronger and healthier mind and body.
Karate is a philosophy of life as well as a system of unarmed self-defense. Literally, “kara-te” means empty hand or hand without a weapon.
As a student you will learn basic techniques (Kihon), prescribed sets of blocks and attacks in a sequence (Kata), and fighting techniques (Kumite).
Kihon (basics) the various blocks, strikes, and kicks are the basics and building blocks upon which you will grow in your learning. Simple basics are learned first, then later combinations of blocks, strikes, and/or kicks will be added for more complex moves. Think of kihon as learning the alphabet – before you can spell words and make sentences, you first need to know the letters of karate.
Kata (forms) plays a very significant function in the art of Karate. Katas have a deep inner meaning, requiring lengthy study and detailed understanding as they apply to the art. Kata, put in simple terms, are pre-planned programs of attach and defense movements executed in the same way. As a student of karate you are taught Katas and commit them to memory, in the process learning many long-established techniques. These techniques will enhance your own capabilities and also preserve the centuries old movements of the art.
Kumite (sparring or fighting) is the application of kihon as well as certain techniques from kata, applied to or against an opponent with the goal being to stop the opponent’s attack and apply a counterattack to render the opponent harmless. When engaging in kumite with an opponent it is essential to not just learn proper techniques, but also to learn proper control, focus the techniques on vital areas of the opponent’s body, and maintain proper distance and timing.
